Midnight Snack

On a nightwalk‚ you come across the perfect midnight snack on the streets of a secluded neighbourhood․ This VRChat world recreates a memory of the streets of Taipei. Like all memories, it’s not entirely accurate. Maybe this is a memory of several streets. My mind has filled in the gaps. But when I walk through the scene, I do get a bit of that old feeling again.

For this VR world, I implemented:

  • World design, including environmental storytelling aspects
  • Interaction design
  • Asset design
  • Particle systems

Notes on Design:

When building this world, the major design challenge was to recreate a sense of place. I chose Tiltbrush as I thought a stylized rendition of the neighbourhod buildings would be more evocative than a realistic one. Tiltbrush has some good integrations with Unity so that part wasn’t hard at all. It was more difficult to create a sense of urban density using the drawn assets while keeping focus on the bun cart. I wanted to use particle systems to give the world a more nostalgic feel, but that proved to be problematic for the Quest 2. Overall, this world was a lesson in increasing performance optimization while staying true to the narrative vision.
